Our family dined at the Champlain restaurant during our stay in Quebec City, and it was truly an elevated fine dining experience. Located within the stunning Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, the restaurant provided an unforgettable setting, especially during the holiday season when the Château is exquisitely decorated with over 20 Christmas trees, each uniquely adorned. This festive backdrop added to the anticipation and grandeur of the evening.

We had made reservations in advance for our party of eight, which I would highly recommend, as the restaurant’s popularity makes walk-ins unlikely. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our table, where the experience began with complimentary champagne for the adults and sparkling cider from Denmark for the children.

Menu Options
Champlain offers both à la carte and prix fixe options. The prix fixe menu featured four-course and six-course choices for adults, priced at approximately C$140 and C$190, respectively, with an optional wine pairing ranging from C$100–C$150. The children’s menu was also prix fixe, offering a four-course meal for C$90. Our group opted for a mix of the prix fixe options, with one diner choosing the wine pairing, while the children enjoyed their curated menu.

The Meal
The dining experience began with an amuse-bouche and a mushroom emulsion served with crackers, reminiscent of truffle mayo, which was absolutely delicious when paired with the bread brought to the table. Each course was expertly prepared, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Standout dishes varied across the group, but the overall quality was consistent and impressive.

The children’s menu stood out as especially thoughtful, ensuring they felt included in the fine dining experience. The pacing of the meal was deliberate, lasting about three hours, allowing us to savor each course without feeling rushed. At the conclusion of the meal, the children received a surprise treat from their menu, and the staff extended the gesture to the entire table. Additionally, each guest received a parting gift of chocolates presented in jewelry box-like packaging.

Service and Atmosphere
The service was impeccable, with our waiter Vincent providing attentive, warm, and family-friendly service. He made the children feel valued, ensuring they had beverages for toasts and engaging with them throughout the meal. The ambience of the restaurant was luxurious and refined, with high ceilings and elegant décor that made the space feel both grand and welcoming. Unique features like a visible meat room and temperature-controlled wine displays enhanced the atmosphere.

Value
It’s important to note that dining at Champlain is expensive, and the cost may not align with traditional notions of value. However, the experience transcends the price of the meal, encompassing the artistry of the food, the exceptional service, and the exquisite setting. While this was a splurge for our family, it was worth it for the memory of sharing such a special holiday dining experience together.

Recommendation
I would recommend Champlain restaurant to families or groups seeking a once-in-a-lifetime fine dining experience in an iconic setting. While the prix fixe options are expensive, à la carte selections may provide a more accessible alternative for those who wish to experience the restaurant without committing to the full prix fixe experience. If you’re looking for a luxurious holiday dining experience, Champlain delivers on every front.
