When my in-laws received a deeply discounted voucher to stay at Dreams Natura Resort and Spa in Cancun during spring break, they generously invited us to join them. While their costs were minimal, we were paying full price, which made me want to research whether this resort was worth the splurge. Having previously stayed at an all-inclusive resort in Costa Rica for part of our honeymoon—a trip that left us with mostly positive memories—I was aware that the quality and value of all-inclusive resorts can vary widely. Dreams Natura has a 4.5-star rating on TripAdvisor, but as always, I turned to the one- and two-star reviews to get a sense of what could potentially go wrong.

Diving Into the Reviews

My initial research confirmed what I suspected: the reviews were all over the place. Complaints ranged from room cleanliness to service issues, food quality, and maintenance problems. I decided to dig deeper by copying the reviews and using a large language model to identify trends.

What stood out the most were recurring complaints about:

  • Cleanliness: Mold, mildew, and musty smells in rooms and bathrooms.
  • Food and Service: Subpar dining experiences, cold or repetitive food, and delays in restaurant seating.
  • Customer Service: Rude or unhelpful staff, particularly at the front desk and in restaurants.
  • Room Assignments: Guests frequently receiving rooms that didn’t match their bookings or expectations.
  • Noise Disturbances: Thin walls, construction noise, and disruptions from wedding events.

On the flip side, the resort also has a significant number of glowing five-star reviews, which made it difficult to weigh the negative experiences against the positive ones.

Assessing the Risk

Initially, I toyed with the idea of booking a backup reservation at another resort in case Dreams Natura didn’t meet our expectations. However, with the grandparents committed to staying here, the idea of splitting the family felt unappealing. Ultimately, we decided to embrace the risk, knowing full well that our experience might fall anywhere on the spectrum between those glowing reviews and the harsh criticisms.

One concern we’re particularly watchful for is cleanliness, especially regarding mold or mildew. That’s a non-negotiable for us when it comes to our family’s health. Other complaints, like long waits for food or trouble finding pool chairs, are more manageable. We’re reasonable travelers and can deal with a fair share of hiccups—as long as no one is in physical or mental danger.

Setting Expectations with the Kids

We’ve shared the reviews with our kids, not to scare them but to set realistic expectations. It’s a lesson we consistently teach them: life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, and sometimes you have to make the best of less-than-ideal situations. We talked about how people’s perceptions of value and fairness vary widely, and how we’ll aim to find joy in the experience no matter what.

At the same time, this trip is a chance to see how Dreams Natura measures up to its reputation. If the reviews are accurate, we’ll take it as a learning experience and move forward with our eyes wide open. Vacations, like life, are about rolling with the punches—and hopefully, enjoying a margarita or two by the pool along the way.
