For our Christmas road trip from New Jersey to Quebec City, Canada, my family of eight rented the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer Series 2 from Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Over the course of a week, we covered more than 1,200 miles through varying winter weather conditions, and the Wagoneer proved to be a solid choice for our travel needs.

Key Takeaways:

  • Spacious and Comfortable: Excellent seating for eight passengers with ample legroom and cargo space, ideal for long trips.
  • Winter-Ready Performance: Handled snow, rain, and freezing temperatures well, with reliable power and stability.
  • Technology and Mechanical Issues: Experienced malfunctions with Apple CarPlay and second-row seat mechanisms.
  • Poor Fuel Efficiency: Averaged 17 mpg, but still cost-effective compared to flying for a large group.
  • Best for Specific Needs: Great for large families with significant cargo needs but not recommended for general or long-term use.

Space and Comfort: A Road Trip Essential

The Wagoneer excelled in providing ample space and comfort for our group. With plenty of legroom and headroom across all three rows, even the 8+ hour stretches on the road felt manageable. The rear cargo area was equally impressive, accommodating luggage for eight passengers—much of it bulky winter gear—without much room to spare. This SUV clearly shines in scenarios where both seating and storage are at a premium.

Driving Experience: Smooth, But With Hiccups

On the road, the Wagoneer performed well. Its acceleration made highway merging and passing easy, and it handled rain, snow, and single-digit temperatures with confidence. However, we encountered a couple of notable issues. The Apple CarPlay malfunctioned at one point, and the mechanism for moving the second-row seat to access the third row had mechanical problems. These setbacks, while not trip-ending, did highlight concerns about the vehicle’s build quality.

Basically the second row wouldn’t do this to allow passengers out midway through our trip

Fuel Efficiency: A Trade-Off

As expected for a large SUV, fuel efficiency was not its strong suit. We averaged around 16 mpg, slightly below its rated figures of 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. However, when compared to the cost of flying for our group, the Wagoneer offered significant savings and proved to be an economical choice for our road trip.

This vehicle is absolutely ENORMOUS

Features and Limitations

The standout feature of the Wagoneer is undoubtedly its spaciousness. However, its sheer size became a challenge in enclosed parking lots, where we sometimes found it too large to fit comfortably. Beyond that, while the interior was functional and comfortable, the technology issues reminded us of Jeep’s reputation for less-than-stellar reliability.

Final Thoughts: A Vehicle for Specific Needs

For a large family needing seating for eight, ample cargo space, and confidence in winter weather, the Jeep Wagoneer Series 2 is a great rental option. It met our needs for this particular trip, and the rental allowed us to bypass long-term ownership concerns often associated with the Jeep brand.

That said, if you’re traveling in milder weather with less luggage or are concerned about fuel efficiency, a smaller and more nimble vehicle might be a better fit. Outside of very specific scenarios, I wouldn’t recommend the Wagoneer. But for our Christmas road trip, it proved to be the right choice for the job.
